Job Summary

Aspirnaut Summer Research Internship Program, Detroit Research Internship Summer Experience (D-RISE) & Research Experiences for Youth (REY) are hiring three (3) undergraduates for our Community Associate for Residential Engagement & Safety (CARES) staff positions. These positions serve as active and visible staff members responsible for supporting the residential life component of our high school summer programs. Our CARES staff oversee and supervise time spent outside of the scientiﬁc research that the twenty (20) interns will conduct through these programs. Our CARES staff responsibilities include: facilitating community-building, supporting high school participants’ safety and well-being, and providing support for Aspirnaut Program, D-RISE and REY Program activities.

CARES staff are expected to work and live in the residence hall from June 08, 2026 – July 31, 2026 and will receive a stipend of $3,600.00 in addition to a housing and meal plan during this time.

From June 08, 2026 – June 12, 2026 there will be an orientation that includes training and pre-program administrative planning.

Please note that due to the on-site supervision responsibilities and the “on-duty” work schedule (listed under the Work Schedule and Responsibilities sections), the ideal candidate should not have any competing obligations, commitments, time away from the program, or outside employment that would conﬂict with the responsibilities associated with this position throughout the program's duration. Additionally, the applicant cannot hold another paid appointment or position at University of Michigan (U-M) while in this role. Personal commitments that would require absence for an extended period of time will eliminate applicants from consideration.

Programs

The Aspirnaut Summer Research Internship Program, which is administered through the Life Sciences Institute (LSI) at U-M, oﬀers Michigan high school students who are entering their senior year a six-week immersive experience in scientiﬁc research, cultivating and encouraging the pursuit of a college education and careers in STEM ﬁelds.

The U-M Detroit Research Internship Summer Experience (D-RISE) offers a six-week, full-time summer research internship for high school students in the U-M Chemistry Department. Participants live on campus Monday through Friday and return home on weekends, experiencing campus life much like U-M students. During the program, students join a chemistry research lab and engage in hands-on, mentored research. D-RISE aims to increase participation of underrepresented students in the sciences by encouraging college enrollment and supporting pathways to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The Center for Materials Innovation (CMI) oﬀers the Research Experience for Youth (REY) Program for 11th-grade Michigan residents, providing research opportunities to encourage participation in science and engineering. Participants spend seven weeks performing materials science research focused on Semiconductors & 2D Materials or Sustainable Polymers.

Work Schedule

There will be 3 CARES staff total, and 2 CARES staff must be “on-duty” during their rotation schedule at all times.
- “On-duty” means present with the students or stationed at the residence hall.
- Each CARES staff will have 2-3 days oﬀ, depending on where they fall in the rotation of the work schedule each week. Days oﬀ will be communicated prior to your start date.
- While one CARES staff may be "off-duty" for designated breaks or administrative tasks, the remaining two CARES staff are required to remain active and present to maintain the required supervision ratio.
Work schedule is as follows:
- From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily, you will serve as a guide for our students. Responsibilities include coordinating lunch transitions and leading students to various scheduled activities.
- “On-duty” from 5:00 PM on weekdays (Monday through Friday) until 9:00 AM the next morning, and all 24 hours throughout the weekend (Saturday and Sunday).
- Sleeping at the residence hall is part of being “on-duty” to attend to emergencies (if needed).

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Live on-site in a university residence hall to provide supervision, safety, and security, and oversee participants for the duration of the program.
Demonstrate responsible behavior by complying with University of Michigan and University Housing policies and procedures, and following local, state and federal laws.
Maintain a residence hall environment that supports participants’ academic and personal development, and assist program staff in addressing residence hall concerns, including conflict resolution and inappropriate behavior.
Respond to student concerns and critical incidents with a restorative approach while being supported by program staﬀ.
Communicate, in a timely fashion, all program-related concerns regarding participants that arise during engagement in the residence hall and programming with program staff.
Build connections, both individually and collectively, with participants by coordinating and implementing events during the evenings of the weekdays and all day on the weekends.
Monitor inventory and create a supply list of materials needed for planned activities.
Collaborate with program staﬀ to develop, carry out, and chaperone evening and weekend activities according to participants’ interests and needs.
Collaborate with the summer program team to coordinate residence hall move-in/move-out plans for all programs.
Complete all required training, including orientation and U-M Children on Campus training.
Attend and contribute to weekly meetings with the summer programs staff and, separately, with the Success Coach.
Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualiﬁcations

Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at U-M and in good standing with your undergraduate institution
Currently 19 years of age or older
Ability to commit to the position for the entire time period (June 08, 2026 – July 31, 2026)
Provide contact information for two (2) professional references who can attest to their experience in fostering community, ensuring participant safety and well-being, and providing high-level program support
Pass the University of Michigan background check

Desired Qualiﬁcations

Currently pursuing an Education, Psychology, Sociology, and/or STEM-related major
Experience serving as a Resident Assistant, Camp Counselor, Peer Mentor, or Teacher’s Assistant.
Experience supervising minors
Experience in mediating interpersonal disputes or managing group dynamics with empathy and professionalism.
Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to creating a space where all participants feel safe and valued.
No competing obligations, commitments, time away from the program or outside employment throughout the duration of the appointment (June 08, 2026 – July 31, 2026)
